Blacklight Art Installation needs sponsor/home :)

Hi y'all-

I do large-scale blacklight string installations and have a really beautiful display that needs sponsorship in the form of power. I am unable to meet my needs for 320 watts to power 2 blacklights. I am looking to place this display where it is dark, out in the open playa. But I am also open to other options. I can bring gas to share a generator.

The wall is 25' across and 10' tall.

LED & EL Wire Soldering Party - LA Area

At the various camping pahtays (LIB & Base-Station) and recent decoms where I've brought my techno-art, people have asked how I make my flashy-blinkies and EL wire art-signs.

On Saturday 6th, 1:00pm, I would like to invite all who are interested in embracing mystic-grooves (Bhodavistic), incense and sipping herbal tea while we together learn how to properly scorch LEDs and fashion EL wire flashies into Burning Man art.

On the evening of May 17th, 2008, the entire building that houses Climate Theater and Gallery NINE (formerly the Anon Gallery) will be taken over by a select group of artists who use light and electricity. 22 eclectic spaces including two theater spaces, multiple rooms as well as a rooftop garden will be filled with illuminated installations, projections, sculptures and performances. The curation is by a group of local artists who are the visual arts and film curators for Climate Theater.

Climate Theater is an alternative arts space in San Francisco's SOMA district that encourages the development of non-traditional performance and experimental work with a focus on collaboration and exploration. About our Curators:
G. Cole Allee received her MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute in 2007. Her work has been exhibited in San Francisco, LA and Tokyo. She is a photo-based artist exploring landscape as cultural iconography, and sometimes, vice versa. She has lived in San Francisco for a decade, teaching photography to youth at risk in Bayview Hunter's Point and recently with the Sixth Street Photography Workshop. While at SFAI she co-curated the Swell Gallery, the graduate venue. She is currently one of the Visual Arts curators for the Climate Theater

Jen Cohen is a video, performance artist who attempts to break the narrative, cinematic genre through the creation of abstract video motifs projected onto non-traditional surfaces. She has exhibited her work through out the Bay Area including venues such as the de Young Museum, Recombinant Media Lab, CNMAT, SomArts, 21 Grand, Roxie Cinema, The Lab, The Fine Arts Cinema and Artists Television Access (ATA). She received a B.F.A in Media Arts from California College of the Arts. Last October she started the 4d Dream-a-thon experimental film series at The Climate Theater and continues to co-curate the series

Kaliisa Conlon is a film and video artist based in San Francisco. After performing with her mystic rock band Pizza Party in the Pacific NW, she received her BFA in Film and Video at California College of the Arts in 2007. Kaliisa now co-curates the experimental film series at the Climate Theater in San Francisco and concocts her witchy art and psychic films from her bedroom in the Mission.

Victoria Mara Heilweil is a photographic artist, educator and curator. She received her MFA in Photography from California College of the Arts in 1995. Her work has been exhibited nationally in New York City, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle. Victoria was the curator and co-owner of a cooperative art gallery in the East Village in NYC. Brendan Leonard uses a variety of media to explore the language and role of conceptual art in the 21st century. mathmos bubble

I had read about the Mathmos bubble online and liked it but did not buy it. Then I saw it in person in a shop here in San Francisco and was compelled to buy it. It's a squishy silicon ball that glows. It bounces. It's rechargeable. The shop only had green, so I bought that even though I would have preferred red. It's a great thing to carry. The light is useful in dark places like poorly-lit streets or out on the beach. It bounces, so you don't need to worry about dropping it. It's what flashlights wish they were. it lights up the whole area around you, not just a narrow beam. Drop it in a thin bag and the light still gets out..

It seems to have gotten a bit more expensive since I bought mine, but if you like glowing things, then just get one. You'll enjoy it and the many people who see it will enjoy it as well.

Blue ones seem to be more widely available in the US. thinkgeek.com and Amazon have them. For other colors, it looks like you'll have to pay more. If you find a deal on a red one, please let me know.

Black light effect

I’d be using the drape in a dark area and then turn the ultraviolet source on.

fuses for light strings

I'm putting together a costume with LED's, EL wire and a 4 AH lead acid battery that I can carry in a backpack. I was hooking stuff up today and had a short circuit, quickly extinguished. It occurred to me that I wouldn't want that going on next to my body. I'm wondering what amp fuse I should use to protect the circuit and myself.

At the moment, the costume's got 8 LED's, two EL drivers and maybe 30 feet of wire on it. I'm a little worried about the 12V circuit shorting from one of my solders coming loose.

Burning man Project with 360 LEDs NEED HELP PRONTO

I don't know if this is the place to ask but I figure it can't hurt. I have built this crazy art piece for burning man that needs around 360 leds. I am going to have 4 differant circuits that require a string of 90 leds each . I figure I have to wire them in series/parallel. I was hoping to use a deep cycle 12V car battery to power all of these LEDs. 270 of these leds are 3.6 V 30 mA RGBs and 90 of them are 4.5 V 30 mA UV LEDSs. So my questions are 1. Will a 12 V deep cycle car battery power all these LEDs for 10 hours at a time? 2 Is the series/parallel method best for this project and conserving energy? and 3. I will be hot gluing the led lens and then sticking them into a clear film canister so will this cause to much heat? Keep in mind these will be used at night time at around 45 to 60 degrees while flying through the air. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I need to have this done within the next week. Okay, I'm hoping for some help on this one... I remember SEEING a post about it, haven't been able to track it down though, and I don't have enough electrical know-how to fake it...

I remember it going somewhat along these lines:

Put a copper ball inside a plastic hoop
Have LEDs attached to the outside of the hoop.. ooh, with a magnet?
the current/friction/whatever caused by the copper ball rolling past would supposedly generate the minimal current needed to cause the LED to light up.

Does this sound like anything you've seen? Or anything that you think is possible? Anyone want to give me a copper-and-magnet-current tutorial? <grin>

Creating portable power

I need help! I'm trying to find or create a portable ( as in, I can walk around with it) power source to power a string of lights. The detachable plug attached to the lights has the following information printed on it:

Input- 120v ac 60hz
Output- 24vac 625ma max:15va
Class 2 power unit

I will admit my knowledge of portable power/battery packs is limited, but I have a project I would like to realize. Can anyone help me figure this out?

UV spotlights

Our burningman camp is going to have some night time performances, and I thought it would be cool to hit the performers with a UV spotlight.

There are a couple of companies that make these, but they range in price from $400 to $2000.

So I found various cheap sources for the components and I'm going to make my own. I thought I'd post some info in case anyone else wants to do the same. I'd also appreciate any suggestions or lessons learned ;)

In general, a spotlight consists of a light source to generate the beam, and a reflector to focus and aim it.

My goal is to generate around 5000 Lumens of UV light, so I have a couple different options for the UV source:
1. One metal halide high wattage (approx 6000 lumens) UV bulb (cheapest found is $40)

2. Multiple (5) 13 Watt Compact Fluorescent (approx 900 lumens each) (each is $12) These are fluorescent light bulbs that screw into a standard incandescent base.

3. Multiple (2) 40 Watt standard fluorescent (approx 3000 lumens each) (cheapest is $20) These are the long tube kind.

So the cost for the bulbs is $40, $60, and $40. But for the metal halide or standard fluorescent tubes, I’ll have to spend a little more $$$ on the fixtures, since they aren’t the standard incandescent consumer kind. I also prefer to have multiple backups, so I’m leaning towards option #2.

Now lets talk about reflectors. I think I’ll have to experiment a little, because I came across a statement (on a high-output, high-cost optics site) that the very best reflector for UV band light is “etched aluminum”. Remember that pure UV is not a visible wavelength, so the best reflector is not necessarily the best visible wavelength reflector.

I can buy light fixtures with built in reflectors easily enough at Home Depot, and then I think I’ll do some experiments with the cheapest aluminum source I know of – aluminum foil.

I love being a mad scientist ;)

in fact, the poi in the long exposures above are the exact same poi I purchased. now, when I play with *my* poi, I don't get the dotted line effect. I get solid lines, even when theyre in strobe mode:

the streetlights in my poi have three modes: solid, strobe, and chase. I want trip mode for the dotted light effect, but someone just told me that trip mode is no more. is that true? why the hell would the manufacturers do that?!

LED Voltage/resistance question

OK. I have a question regarding LED circuits. I've been reading and reading various websites, and I kind of get how it works, but I need some clarification and maybe some better examples than the ones I've seen.

My question is regarding voltage and resistance. I realize that I need to have a resistor in my circuit when using LEDs, and I kind of get how to determine that (R = V/I). I'm running everything off a 12v deep cycle gel cell battery.

Let me use an example to ask my question. I want to get 10-12 UV LEDs, connect them to a board, and basically have a blacklight made out of LEDs. I assume I should connect them in parallel. UV LEDs are 3.9V and want 30mA. My question is, do I need to do anything to regulate the voltage down to an appropriate level, or will it just take the voltage it needs - and then I figure out the resistor required by just assuming it will only draw 3.9v? The whole thing is kind of confusing to me.. Also, since they are in parallel, do I need a resistor for each LED?

A Little Tech Help...LEDs and programming

Creating an instillation for burningman that I want to light with LEDs in the interior space and on the exterior surface. It is essentially a 15 foot woven 3/8 dome shape. I want to program through slow color transitions independently at the same rate; ie. the inside is red, the outside is blue...slowly changing through the spectrum.

My idea is to find a CHEAP 3-4 channel programmer and cluster MR16 24-32 ( www.superbrightleds.com) LED lamps in threes( Red, Blue, Green) Total interior
RGB trios four on a channel, total exterior RGB trios eight on two channels.

By the way, my technical skills are shit and will be looking for ease in assembly and programming. Oh yeah, I don't have much money either. I am, however, inspired!

Fluoro dyes

I'm on a search high and low for fluorescent fabric dyes...real, permanent, quality dyes for making batiks and clothing, etc. All I can find is yellow on dharmatrading.com. Any leads?

Trying to Identify UV responsive string

At a New Years event Sea of Dreams SF.
They had a hallway filled with UV responsive string? black lights lining the walls so you had to walk through all the glowy string.
Nice effect. I wondering if anyone knew what it was called and or where I could buy some.

SF Muni has LED tail lights on buses,
and everytime I drive behind one
I get spoking effects from them...
Hmmm... Is this a residual hangover,
or are there any unaltered brains out there

So I've been playing with long exposure times on the camera and a single blue LED.

There's obviously more to be done, but I put three images up in the image gallery (Long Exposure 1, Long Exposure 2, and Long Exposure 3)

What do folks think? ;)

Glowing Stuffed animals!

I've been amassing a collection of stuffed animals that glow in black light. Most of these come as prizes at Carnivals, so it was hit or miss for a while, till I discovered these gems are freqently found at yard sales and thrift stores. It seems like the more cheaply made the stuffed animal, the more it glows! I found a fabulously weird owl the other day, with more blacklight reactive colors than I have ever seen before. I would like to do an installation someday of all these glowing freaky creatures.

Jewelry options getting better

About 10 years ago I was talking to a jewelry student at RISD (I was in ID) about her effort to incorporate leds into high end jewelry, and he was running into a lot of problems with having the battery not look bulky. Today for 50 cents I picked up a glowing heart at walgreens with a very small elegant battery pack, plus a free momentary demo switch I can use On something else. Never has there been a better time to design with light... and I bet it just keeps getting better.

remedial el-wire question

Does anyone know how the mm measurements of el-wire correspond with the gauge measurements of jewelry wire? As in, would 1.3 mm angel hair el-wire (or larger) work in a machine that knits 28-, 30-, and 32-gauge wire?

Nokia phone with LED persistence of vision messaging

I have a bright pink, neon looking, heart-shaped light I try to turn on every night. I really ought to get a timer for that. I don't know that it's attracted more love to me, but I have to smile everytime I look at it glowing.

Of my two lava lamps, I like the glitter one the best. I have one of the blobby ones, too, but it only looks really cool for the first hour or so. They both give off a fine glow.

One of my favorite toys is a sound/light machine that has a globe on top, so the glow is cast around the room as you listen to your choice of one of the soothing sounds. Besides changing patterns, it also changes color.

Ah, glowing things, glow-in-the-dark Silly Putty; glowsticks; emergency flairs, sparklers, the TV screen when the satellite dish is turned off, that lump of goo in my bathroom…

The Weather Project at the Tate Modern

Hello - I just joined your wonderful and fun glowing things tribe!

I love the tribe's pic of Olafur Eliasson's 'The Weather Project' at the Tate Modern in London. I was just there a couple of weeks ago - the exhibit is very awesome! Of course, I had to lay on the floor and absorb it all...the sun, the misty weather...

It takes a couple of seconds before you realize that it isn't a full sun - it's a half sun, with the other half a reflection on the mirrored ceiling.

I am curious - Has anyone else seen it? If you can make it to London, the exhibit will be there through March 21.

A fun side note: In December, 250 UK Burners dressed as Santas 'stormed' the weather exhibit during their annual SantaCon and had their fun in the sun, before they were asked to leave!...

I happened to pick up a cheap, but very cool, strobing necklace capsule thing from a street vendor. It cost about $7-8 there, would have cost much more here.

I am mostly into cool neon/el wire toys, but like anything that glows. I've made several fun cool neon toys for the playa, and have also decorated my apartment with it. What is the glowing medium of choice in this tribe, or is it an exciting mixed bag???

I look forward to discussing and creating fun glowing things with you!

MYSDOM needs performers

Mario Merz

I did a search for him and it turns out that a. he died last month and b. that he did some interesting non-glowing work as well :-) See an obit at http://www.guardian.co.uk/italy/story/0,12576,1083845,00.html

He "was a leading member of the Italian artistic movement known as Arte Povera. Merz and his colleagues, who included his wife Marisa, used ordinary, "poor" materials, both natural and manufactured, to create the most poetic, extraordinary effects.."

foam cup installation
